Dignity Health Manager of Philanthropy - Major/Campaign Gifts in ARROYO GRANDE, California

About the Position

Serves as a member of the Foundation development staff responsible for growing and maintaining a comprehensive major gifts program focused on attracting gifts in excess of $10,000 (or the defined major gift threshold). The manager builds strong relationships with major giving donors and prospects and actively develops a major giving pipeline of larger gifts and increased revenue.

Personally research and manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects. In consultation with other Foundation leadership, develops written cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans, utilizing a moves management approach to engage prospects and donors.

Effectively devote - at a minimum - 60 percent of an annual work year's hours to face-to-face contacts with identified, qualified potential and existing major gift donors and provide documentation of such activities as part of a moves management program recorded on CRM.

Manages and sustain program that engages and involves Foundation trustees, volunteers and staff in major gift planning, cultivation, solicitations and gift stewardship.

Works with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and other appropriate leadership to identify approved potential programs and projects for major gift support. Participates in the development of cases for support and all the proposals and materials needed to make such activities successful.

In collaboration with the Vice President of Philanthropy (VPP), and in accordance with the mission and values of Marian, Arroyo Grande and Dignity Health, the Manager of Philanthropy - Major/Campaign Gifts is responsible for managing the major and planned giving programs of the Marian Regional Medical Center and Arroyo Grande Community Hospital Foundation.

The Manager Philanthropy is directly responsible for the discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of an active portfolio of major and planned giving donors and prospective donors.

The Manager Philanthropy is skilled in balancing personal and technological approaches in building relationship with Marian donors and donor prospects to increase the volume of new donor relationships and build relationship with existing major and planned giving donors.

Produces gift proposals, contact reports and appropriate follow-up materials; records activities and notes in donor tracking information system.

In consultation with professional advisors, prepares proposals for prospects regarding appropriate gift instruments, as needed.

The Manager Philanthropy will establish good working relationships with Administration, Directors of Marian Regional Medical Center and Arroyo Grande Community Hospital departments, physicians, volunteers and Foundation Board of Directors.

Selection Criteria

  • Experience in philanthropy identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors and donor prospects with a proven track record of securing major and planned gifts.

  • Minimum three (3) years of not-for-profit fundraising and development experience. In addition, one (1) to three (3) years' direct work experience as fund raising professional with a major gift portfolio

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required.

  • Master’s degree and/or Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) certification desired.

  • Experience in relationship management donor tracking software.

  • Specialized training in major gifts and planned giving.

  • Exceptional verbal, written, interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • A polished, professional communication style is essential.

  • Works well independently identifying priorities and making independent judgements to accomplish gifting goals.

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office applications

  • Proficient in contemporary technology tools to support efficient communication and information tracking.

  • Positive, creative, critical thinker with the ability to motivate volunteers and staff to achieve identified goals.

  • Ability to quickly assess the philanthropic community, identify and cultivate new sources of support for the organization.

  • Proficiency with philanthropy related information systems such as Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge, eCRM and Crescendo.



Bachelor's degree in a related field or a combination of education and/or additional job-related experience may be substituted in lieu of the degree.
