Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Sr. Benefits Specialist is the senior level benefits expert for Dignity Health Medical Foundation's Medical Group's benefits, absence management and workers' compensation programs. This position also resolves escalated and complex issues regarding physician and provider pay and benefits. This position interacts with physicians and medical group leadership on a regular basis and is expected to engage on a professional level with a service-oriented approach. 

Responsibilities may include:

  • Functions as the benefits "expert" within the Dignity Health Medical Foundation’s Physician Services Department, which includes answering all health, welfare and retirement benefit related questions from physicians and providers, and working with them to resolve any issues that need vendor or corporate intervention.

  • Recommends benefit changes based on analysis of information to manage costs and ensure competitive positioning for clinic-based business operations.

  • Maintains all benefit materials for physicians and providers including: benefit grids, cost sheets, new hire handouts, etc.

  • Develops model to communicate Total Compensation information annually to employees.

  • Coordinates all activities for the physician life and long-term disability plan which includes monthly reporting of salary calculations, enrollment issues, etc.

  • Organizes all benefit meetings including annual open enrollment meetings, voluntary benefit education meetings, retirement investment meetings, etc. Ensure that all physicians and providers have the information they need to fully access their benefit plans. Work with benefit vendors to ensure accurate benefit program information and rates are entered into the benefit system.

  • Conducts new physician and provider benefit orientation sessions. Follow-up to ensure timely enrollment in plans. Resolve issues related to enrollment problems.

  • Develops and maintain a "benefits packet" to be used in new physician and provider orientations.

  • Collaborates with Recruiting to develop a benefits summary tool appropriate for use at open houses. Collaborate with Recruiting to develop a benefits summary tool appropriate for inclusion with all new hire offer letters.

  • Coordinates the annual benefit plan renewal process including: reviewing cost sheets, projecting budget increases and preparing employee/physician communications on impending changes.

  • Oversees the administration of leaves of absence for all physicians and providers. Provide information to physicians and providers regarding pay and benefits while on a leave of absence. Start and stop pay as appropriate during the leave. Work with third party administrator regarding set up, maintenance and communications of leaves of absence.

  • Oversees the administration of the interactive process in response to requests for reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to responding to questions, setting up and facilitating meetings, preparing and delivering documentation to all applicable parties and keeping accurate records.

  • Oversees the administration of workers' compensation claims for physicians and providers. Ensures documentation is completed and received in accordance with OSHA regulations. Reports injuries and illnesses to OSHA as required. Maintains documentation on all workers' compensation claims. Answers questions in regards to workers' compensation for physicians, providers and medical group leadership.

  • Coordinates and schedules all ergonomic evaluations for medical group physicians and providers. Works with medical group leadership to implement recommended ergonomic changes.

  • Verifies I-9 compliance documents for all new medical group physicians and providers and enter information into the E-Verify system. Ensures compliance and timely reporting in accordance with IRS regulations.

  • Completes other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in an increasingly responsible Human Resource related position preferred.

  • Knowledgeable in multiple software packages including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Must be very organized and detailed oriented.

  • Due to the nature of the work, quality and accuracy are critical issues.

  • Must have the ability to evaluate situations both tactically and strategically in order to make decisions that are sound from both a short-term and longer-term perspective.

  • Requires outstanding communication skills, both oral and written, to communicate concepts, information, content and answer questions.

  • Knowledge of concepts, practices, procedures and laws associated with benefits and leave administration preferred or must have a willingness and the ability to learn the information on-the-job and through external courses and development opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare experience preferred.

  • BS/BA degree in Human Resources or Business strongly preferred.
