Position Summary

The Manager of External Corporate Communications is responsible for advancing the organizations business goals and reputation for thought leadership and programmatic development. Specifically, this position manages day to day external communications as it relates to cultivating new opportunities to drive the Dignity Health narrative, participate and develop communication strategies as need for programmatic committees and affiliated organizations that are aligned to our ministerial goals. This would include media relations to enhance or protect the reputation of Dignity Health and working with agencies to develop stories that position Dignity Health as a national leader in health care.

Core Duties

Advancing Corporate Reputation : Provides communications and public relations counsel for internal project workgroups and committees. Leads Dignity Health’s 3 rd party affiliate collaborations with groups such as the Alliance of Catholic Health Care, Catholic Health Association, American Hospital Association.

Strategic External Communications : Develops compelling narratives that will support favorable media coverage. Identifies spokespeople, storylines, and works with agency partners to advance business objectives and position Dignity Health as a national healthcare enterprise. Supports development of public relations materials including digital content, press releases, pitch templates, monitoring and tracking reports, etc.

Special Projects: Leads special projects with corporate partners, affiliates, and clinical leaders to protect and advance organizational goals.

Functional Competencies

  • Leads strategic communications and media strategies to advance organizational thought leadership and reputation as a national health care system. Actively develops and manages numerous communication plans for various business functions and organizational teams.

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills with internal and external stakeholders including: media, executives, and external partners.

  • Supports media relations for proactive external campaigns. This includes strategic media counsel, preparation and staffing interviews, and reactive messaging as needed. Writes and supports proactive media pitches, press releases, and other proactive news stories. This alsoincludes proofing materials, research, and fact checking.

  • Ability to synthesize high level and proprietary information with discretion. Manages confidential projects.

  • Ability to perform multiple communication initiatives and tasks in a timely manner.

  • Ability to prioritize according to their level of importance, daily and long term.

Limited Travel


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in media relations, public affairs, and/or corporate communications. Media relationships with top tier publications desired.

  • Health care experience required, with hospital/provider experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability in reputation management, media relations, issues management, and internal communications required, with experience in public policy or legislative affairs, a plus.


  • Bachelor’s degree required. Emphasis in journalism, public relations, public health, communications or other related field preferred.

Special Skills:

  • Experience in marketing or brand storytelling, social media strategy, video, and writing. Understanding of online analytics, UI, CRM, and SEO a plus.
